| Task force works to improve chile industry in New Mexico
With big farms getting even bigger and the volatility of the pricing system involved in farming, many small farmers might be looking for their own niche or a way to diversify. Specialty crops, like chiles, may be the answer for some New Mexico farmers.
According to the New Mexico Agricultural Statistics Service, the chile is one of the state's most profitable vegetables, second only to onions in terms of cash receipts. In 2003, 14,700 acres of chiles were harvested producing 85,360 tons of the produce. That year, the value of the New Mexico chiles was estimated at $41.08 million.
